Tibet to invest billions in environmental protection
 2006-02-10

Tibet's Finance Department announced recently that the autonomous region will invest 6 billion yuan (US$739 million) from 2006 to 2010 in environmental protection, an increase of 1.4 times over that of the past 5 years.

The chairman of the Tibetan Government said that Tibet will focus on protection of its natural forests, grasslands, wetlands as well as headstreams of rivers and lakes and reinforce construction and administration of nature reserves, such as the Qomolangma (Everest), Chiangtang Basin and Brahmaputra Grand Canyon.

Moreover, the Tibetan government will strive to maintain biodiversity and a virtuous cycle of the nature, carry out water pollution control projects in main rivers, and boost sewage disposal and refuse treatment in urban areas.

By the end of 2005, Tibet had built 38 different kinds of nature reserves, including 9 national reverses and 6 autonomous regional reserves. Total area of those nature reserves reached 408,300 square kilometers, accounting for 34.03% of Tibet's territory, ranking No. 1 in China. During the 10th Five-Year Plan period, Tibet appropriated and disbursed nearly 200 million yuan of capital for construction of nature reserves in the Qomolangma (Everest) and Lalu Wetland.

Initial resource estimate shows considerable mine deposit in Lhasa
 2006-02-09

Gerald S. Panneton, President and CEO of Continental Minerals Corporation, and Anthony Garson, President and CEO of Great China Mining Inc., announce the positive results of an initial mineral resource estimate for the recently discovered Xietongmen copper-gold deposit, located 240 kilometres from the city of Lhasa in Tibet, People's Republic of China.

This initial resource estimate demonstrates that Xietongmen is a significant porphyry copper-gold deposit with high copper and gold grades. The deposit remains open in all directions - in particular, to the north, east and south - so there is excellent potential to expand the mineral resource. Delineation drilling, utilizing six rigs, is planned to resume later this month.

A substantial program is planned for the Xietongmen Project in 2006, including significant drilling, baseline environmental and socioeconomic studies, resource estimates, metallurgical testing and mine planning. The goal is to fully delineate the Xietongmen deposit and to collect the engineering, environmental and socioeconomic data necessary to complete a feasibility study for the Project in 2007. Exploration of additional targets that have been identified will also be carried out. In conjunction with these activities, the community engagement program will be expanded with the long term objective to ensure that the project provides direct, tangible benefits for local communities.
